Account lockout: what it is and how to recover

Published:
Updated:

To protect accounts against password guessing, MobilityManager temporarily locks an account after repeated failed sign-in attempts. This article explains when a lockout happens and how to recover.

How lockout works

  • After 5 failed sign-in attempts, your account is locked.
  • The lockout lasts 15 minutes.
  • While locked, every sign-in attempt is refused, even with the correct password.

When your account is locked you see a message such as "Account is locked. Try again in N minute(s)." The number counts down as the lockout period passes.

Note: Each wrong password increases a failed-attempt counter. A single successful sign-in resets that counter to zero, so occasional mistakes do not accumulate over days.

How to recover

Option 1: Wait for the lockout to expire

The simplest option is to wait. After 15 minutes the lockout clears automatically, the failed-attempt counter is reset, and you can sign in again with the correct password.

Option 2: Reset your password to unlock immediately

If you cannot wait, or you are locked out because you forgot your password, reset it:

  1. On the sign-in page, choose Forgot password.
  2. Request a reset for your email address.
  3. Set a new password using the reset token.

Completing a password reset clears the lockout and resets the failed-attempt count, so you can sign in straight away with your new password.

Tip: Resetting your password is the fastest way out of a lockout. It removes the lockout the moment the new password is saved, without waiting the remaining minutes.

Avoiding lockouts

  • If you are unsure of your password, reset it rather than guessing repeatedly, since each wrong try counts toward the 5-attempt limit.
  • Watch for auto-filled credentials from an old password saved in your browser, which can silently use up attempts.
  • Check that you selected the correct company before you sign in.
