Updating or replacing a license
This article explains how to update or replace the license on an existing MobilityManager installation — for renewals, plan upgrades, or switching from the demo to a full license.
When to use update versus first-time activation
- First-time activation is used only when no license exists yet and runs through the onboarding wizard.
- Update/replace is used whenever a license is already present — including the demo. Attempting a first-time activation on a system that already has a license is refused with "A license is already activated."
Who can replace a license
Installing or replacing a license is gated by the softwareLicense:manage permission. This is held by SystemAdmin and by any custom role you grant it to. Reading the current license, by contrast, is available to any signed-in user because the UI needs the limits and module flags to render.
Replace the license
- Obtain the new signed license key.
- Optionally validate it first: an administrator can check the key and see its expiry date and seat limits without installing anything.
- In the License management area, choose the update/replace action and paste the full signed key.
- Submit. The system verifies the signature and applies the new entitlements.
Tip: Validation is a safe dry run. Use it to confirm you pasted the right key and that its expiry and limits match what you expect before committing.
What changes and what is preserved
Replacing a license refreshes your entitlements from the new key while keeping the installation's identity and your data intact.
| Refreshed from the new key | Preserved from before |
|---|---|
| Expiry date | First activation date |
| Seat limits (companies, vehicles, users) | Activation fingerprint |
| Enabled modules | All companies, users, and vehicles |
Note: Because the first-activation data is preserved, the clone-detection and clock-tamper checks continue to work across a renewal — replacing the key does not reset them.
If the update fails
- "Invalid license signature" — the key is altered or was truncated on paste; re-copy the full token.
- "License expired" — the key's expiry date is already in the past; request a current key.
- "No license found to update" — there is no existing license, so use first-time activation instead.
After replacement
The new limits and modules apply immediately. Review the license status view to confirm the expiry date, seat limits, and enabled modules are what you expect. If you upgraded seat limits, any creation that was previously blocked by a cap will now succeed once you are within the new limit.
