Transfer a licence plate between vehicles
This article shows you how to move a licence plate from one vehicle to another using the plate takeover feature. Takeover is the safe way to reassign a plate: it updates both vehicles' plate timelines in a single step, without deleting any history or creating a new vehicle.
What plate takeover does
When you replace a vehicle but keep its plate (a Kennzeichenmitnahme), the plate needs to leave the outgoing vehicle and appear on the incoming one. Takeover performs this atomically:
- The source vehicle's current plate is moved to the target vehicle, and the target's plate history gets a new open interval for it.
- The source vehicle is given the new plate you specify, and its history gets a matching new interval.
- Any open plate intervals on both vehicles are closed as of the effective date, and both vehicles' current plates are updated.
A note is written to each vehicle's timeline recording that the plate was taken over from, or transferred to, the other vehicle. No rows are deleted, so the full history of both vehicles stays intact.
Perform a plate takeover
This action requires the Vehicles.Manage permission (FleetManager, SystemAdmin, or a custom role granted it).
- Open the vehicle that currently holds the plate (the source) and select the Licence plates tab.
- Choose Plate takeover.
- Enter the Target vehicle ID — the vehicle that should receive the current plate.
- Enter the New plate for this vehicle — the plate the source vehicle will carry afterwards.
- Optionally set an Effective date. If left blank, today's date is used for closing and opening the intervals.
- Confirm. Both vehicles' plate histories are updated together.
Note: The source and target must be two different vehicles. A takeover onto the same vehicle is rejected. Both vehicles must already exist in your fleet.

Warning: Do not try to reassign a plate by deleting history entries and retyping them on the other vehicle. That leaves gaps in both timelines. Plate takeover keeps both records auditable and consistent.
